Aerial Innovation: Exploring the Capabilities of Drones in the Building Industry

About this webinar

The role of drones in reality capture and building documentation continues to evolve rapidly every year. With billions of dollars in research and development going towards the unmanned aerial vehicle industry, many previously cost-prohibitive services are now within reach of most architects and building industry professionals. FAA-certified pilots can help you leverage drones to the fullest, and when combined with an exterior building scan using terrestrial laser scanning, architects and building owners often find that aerial drone surveys can be a great complement or alternative to a full 3D Revit model or CAD exterior elevations. In this course, the team from Existing Conditions will provide attendees with the information they need to leverage drone technology to properly evaluate the conditions of their buildings through the use of photographic, thermographic, and photogrammetric data. By completing this course, participants will better understand how to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the occupants of the built environment and the local community through the use of drone hardware, software, and drone service providers.

What you'll learn

Learning Objective 1: Learn how architects, building owners, and real estate professionals are using drone technology to document buildings at the beginning of a project, which helps to reduce the risk of costly errors and enables shared access among multiple project members. Additionally, understand how drones are used to gain access to hard-to-reach areas, mitigating the risk of exposing project team members to unsafe conditions, and discover ways to reduce health and safety risks for building occupants and the local community while working on existing, aging buildings.

Learning Objective 2: Understand how to leverage drone hardware, specifically the DJI Mavic Series and DJI Matrice Series, to properly evaluate the exterior conditions of existing buildings in order to reduce risks and add value to projects. You will also understand the various functionality and benefits of each hardware series, enabling you to choose the best option for your specific needs.

Learning Objective 3: See how software such as DroneDeploy, Scopito, and Pix4D can be utilized to improve communication among project members and eliminate many health and safety risks present on building renovations. You will gain an understanding of the key features and capabilities of each software, and learn how to leverage them to enhance project collaboration, data management, and decision-making processes.

Learning Objective 4: Witness multiple real-world case studies to illustrate how drone hardware and software are utilized in the building industry today to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the local community and building occupants. By the end of this course, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of how these tools can help building owners and architects make informed decisions to enhance their buildings' performance, safety, and sustainability.
